With significant changes in the energy paradigms in many countries, India is now propelling towards the usage of clean renewables (eg. wind turbines and photovoltaics) in place of fossil-based resources.
Increasing interconnection of these renewable sources and storage, require advanced control of power systems. Power electronics will be a significant area, changing the character of renewable energies in power generation.
The PERI Lab was founded with the goal of researching the power electronics technology that will help the nation meet the demands of reliable and environmental-friendly electricity generation from Renewable Energy Systems. As a part of the department of Electrical Engineering in Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, the ground work for PERI Lab began in January 2014 with Dr. Sandeep Anand, who is a faculty member in the department of Electrical Engineering, as its advisor. Since then there have been more than 50 students and employees who have been associated with the PERI Lab.
Equipped with advanced electrical equipments that facilitate research and development in the field of power electronics, the lab has drawn considerable sponsors and collaborators. To name a few - Dept. Of Science & Technology, Govt. Of India; Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation Of India (ALIMCO); National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC), Emerson Network Power, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
Some of the key projects, wherein PERI Lab has contributed are Solar inverters for the Smart City Projects by the Ministry of Power, Govt. Of India; Prototype development & control of Microgrids in association with Indo-UK Center for Education and Research in Clean Energy; Secondary Controller design & validation on controller-in-loop with Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF).
